The Nuance of Language
Tutor: Nabeelah Usman
Sweet lecture on language but your audibility was low
We are very sorry to hear this and we will work on it. In the meantime, please try using a headphone perhaps?
Even with headphones, the volume is still low.
This beautifully ties into the fine art of specificity and the PCVE on social media modules. I loved the historical context of hate speech. This course is beautiful. Understanding the importance of language can help with the intentionality of PCVE, especially in postcolonial contexts.
Indeed, dear Fanidh. We worked hard with the tutors so that the PCVE and Creative Writing workshops “speak” to each other towards an end goal = creating great counternarratives to violent extremism and hate speech that are organic and powerful.
I loved this , some authors are scared of getting their work lost in translation. Thanks to this
Africa is a land of so many languages and language blocks. Translation is an important part of this.
Thanks a ton!
Thanks a lot for the deep insight.
Language is very powerful tool and it is my hope that I will be able to use it to counter extremists narratives
Language for sure is a very strong and influential aspect of society. It can make or break relationships. This is the reason why creative writing is an important tool in PCVE.
I’m glad she has brought up the challenge of translating your thoughts that re in our african languages into English, sometimes the sweetness gets lost, sadly.
This is true. But that is the burden of bilingual writers, we must be able to always seek out new ways to express ourselves truly.
Language is very fascinating and it’s nit a wonder why some words might be changed or lost in translation hence changing the whole meaning .
I think we shouldn’t try direct translation and out more effort in interpreting then translating the actual meaning.
Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism through ‘Soft Approach’
“A written language is more formal and a spoken language is less formal.” Cheers to that Ma’am 👍👌
🙂
language is as important as the message itself.Translation also plays a very important role in ensuring the message reaches widely. This is truly useful in PCVE
Indeed. Translation has been one of the banes of African literature.
Thank you.
