Understanding the Threat of Violent Extremism
Tutor: Khadija Gumbi
The preview has been very educative and insightful.
We are very happy with this feedback. We hope the course itself will prove very educative and useful.
Please can extreme domestic violence be categorized as VE?
It depends. A major ingredient of Violent Extremism is the ideological aspect, which may or may not exist in domestic violence, however extreme it may be in terms of vehemence or impact. That said, all violence is abhorrent and should always only come to the equation when dialogue, mutual understanding and accommodation have been tried (which generally succeed).
Also, as citizens interested in the welfare and development of our societies and communities, we must be interested in what lies at the heart of all violence, the push and pull factors as it were, so we can address them and avoid the devastating effects of all-out violence.
I hope this helps? What are your thoughts, Musa?
Tackling the issue of VE from the grassroots like family and society. Social factors are one of the major drivers of VE and the environments also plays an important role. I believe the Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree so the parents of the upcoming generations need to be educated on the detriments of VE in every society. The elders can then pass on the ideology to their young ones.
The preview provides quite some good introduction to understanding violent extremism.
We are quite happy to hear this, Mwangi. Looking forward to your taking the courses today and getting even more feedback

We are very happy to receive this feedback, Abba Adamu.
I follow your explanation for those interrelated concepts.
Thank you
You are very welcome. And we hope it will be useful in your work, and in coming up with yoru story.
Yes sir!
This got me thinking about how we can prevent the threats. Since emotions are contagious, extremism in extreme subsets of a society strives on it. Weeding out such subsets will help prevent violent extremism. The journey begins from Understanding it.
Thanks you for this presentation.
We are glad to hear this is helpful already. You are very correct that emotions is the key, hence the need to finding subtle ways to address extremism before it gets violent, such as the use of arts, stories, plays, poetry, and performance. This is a “soft” approach that addresses extremism “idea-for-idea”, thus we build counternarratives, which is what this project is about.
The preview is quite educative, insightful and interesting.
