Regional and Multilateral Approaches to PCVE

Cool module. I am also interested in unpacking the intersection of Islamophobia and violent extremism prevention campaigns both in Europe and Africa. In terms of local community concerns, I also wonder how violent extremism is conceptualized in local langues and whether this is taken into account in the elaboration of frameworks.
I feel Africa needs to double the efforts like our friends the EU. If we can have an earlier warning mechanism to prevent violent extremism, we shall see more progress in all sectors, economic, social, political. A cross border initiative is paramount to ensure that certain nationalities are not stereotyped.
Africa experiences more terror attacks from extremists as compared to the rest of the continents. Why is this the case??
AFRICOM should be strengthen and mandated under a regional agreement with AU to extend protection and fight against terrorism and extremists activities in all and any African state
I totally agree with Pius, we should double efforts but use our narratives to come up with homegrown solutions for our problems, we have been in this space for too long. I love the idea of youth empowerment, education and sports activities.
Extremism transcends National frontiers hence there needs to be a well coordinated global approach similar to what we has been done with the pandemic.
There is need to make national counter terrorism strategies work by addressing the drivers of radicalisation and also giving communities a front seat in developing home based solutions that seek to address issues that face them.
When you critically examine all the continents; you will realize that Africa, especially Sub-saharan Africa is the most affected in terms of insurgency. Government should engage the youths in this region. The socio-economic victims should be taken away from the streets and bring them back to class. Moral education should be thought in schools. There should be proper regional control and monitoring unit along the boarders of neighbouring counties, to control the movement of strange people. There should be draconian punishment for the sponsors of terrorism. They should be tried openly. The inflow of weapons from other continents like Europe and Asia should be properly monitored.
Government should not fight terrorism alone, but also look into the cause of terrorism.
Africa needs to start taking care of its borders, and its people. It is very important to look into all that we blindly accept from other nations/continents, and we need to stop letting politicians be driven by greedy ideologies of power and dictatorship, which contributes a great deal to the forming of such rebel groups/terror groups.
Leadership requires maturity and discipline. We need more African leaders with such traits.
I feel there’s a disconnect between communities and government agencies and a misunderstanding of what the relevant roles should be.
This is quite true, Alkasim. There is often a binary between the “civic space” and what is “national security” in the sense of these being always uncooperation and nearly mutually exclusive. What can we do to bridge the false divide?
